Raw Purple Mica

These 2 beautifully pearlescent specimens of purple mica our representative of the older forms of mica. They also have a lovely pleochroic effect turning the purple to red in areas when the direction of view changes . The age of a Mica sample can be determined by its appearance which gives information of the way the mineral grew. The older specimens, like these two pieces form in very thin layers that can take thousands to even millions of years to form. They are considered the slower cooling  form of mica as they form in deep Lithium rich magma. These crystals grow deep within Lilium rich magma, which gives for a much longer cooling time allowing these Mica “ books, given the name due to its appearance from the side. Like pages of a book” , Or aggregates , the time to form in these thin, crystallized sheets. If pulled apart, they would be glass clear. The more rapidly cooling form of Mica appears in rock form with tiny crystal formations growing within the rock.
